Dr Pieter Fraaij

Pieter Fraaij is a pediatrician, employed at both the departments of Viroscience and Pediatrics. He started his medical training in 1993 at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. After obtaining his Medical Degree, he worked as a PhD-student at the division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology of the Erasmus MC-Sophia. During this period he performed studies on clinical, virological and immunological aspects of High Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) in HIV-1 infected children. These studies were performed both in the Netherlands (Erasmus MC-Sophia) and in Germany (Heinrich Heine Univerität, Düsseldorf). Currently he participates in the labcinical flu research team together with prof. Guus Rimmelzwaan. Their unique work situation allows them to translate research questions from bench to bedside and vice versa. Questions raised during the treatment of patients can be answered in the lab of Rimmelzwaan, whereas results obtained in the laboratory can be confirmed in humans.
