Dr. McElhaney’s research interests include the impact of immunosenescence on the immune responses to vaccination, immunologic biomarkers of protection mediated by vaccination, and how vaccination plays a role in preventing disability in older adults. Her research program, the “Vaccine Initiative to Add Life to Years” (VITALiTY), is an interdisciplinary approach to identifying risk factors for catastrophic disability, explore the contribution of “inflammaging”, and design interventions to reduce risk of disability including vaccines and immunotherapies.

Dr. McElhaney is a Member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Aging Advisory Board, and serves on the editorial boards of Vaccine, Journal of Immunology, and Journal of Infectious Diseases She has also had consultancies on advisory boards, publication committees, and data safety and monitoring boards for vaccine and pharmaceutical companies, and is an Adviser for the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza. Her research is supported by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
