David Ecker, PhD

Dr. Ecker is a Divisional Vice President and a General Manager at Ibis Biosciences, an Abbott Company. Dr. Ecker was the founder of Ibis Biosciences and was a co-founder of Isis Pharmaceuticals. Along with his core team, he was a primary inventor of the Ibis technology, which was acquired by Abbott in 2009 and is now commercially marketed as the Abbott PLEX-ID. The technology was developed for infection control, infectious disease diagnostics, food and biological product safety, biological weapons defense and human and microbial forensics and development was sponsored by multiple government agencies. Dr. Ecker has over 28 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, has published over 100 scientific papers, and is an inventor on over 70 issued US patents.

He and the team he leads have won numerous technology innovation awards including the 2009 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Award Gold Medal Winner (top honor of the year) and the top award in Medicine & Biotechnology category; the 2009 Top 10 innovations in life science of the year from The Scientist; the 2005 R&D 100 award from R&D magazine, recognizing the most significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year; and the 2006 Association of Laboratory Automation Top Innovation of the Year award.

Dr. Ecker has a strong interest in government service and has participated in numerous US government advisory boards and study panels for DARPA, DTRA, NIH, FDA, DHS, HHS and other agencies. Dr. Ecker was recently appointed to the National Biodefense Science Board as a voting member for the period of 2011-2014.
